Covered Boxes

A question came up recently in the Fans of Blackbird Designs Facebook group on fabric covered boxes after Carol Hinze Mundel posted some of her finished projects (pictured below with her permission.)

  • Down in the Valley
  • Spring Green Pincushion
  • Last Rose of Summer

In October 2009, Alma post a two part tutorial on the Blackbird Designs Blog with the steps she used to construct her boxes. The links to those tutorials are listed below.

The Covered Box - Questions & Answers

During the discussion, two books were recommended by other stitchers. I have ordered both of them.

The first one is a beautiful book by the Royal School of Needlework. RSN: Embroidered Boxes (Royal School of Needlework Guides). It is written by Heather Lewis. Published 2020. I ordered mine from eBay but it is available for any number of stores.

And Carol recommended Constructing and Covering Boxes: The Art and Craft of Box Making – February 28, 2020. I also ordered this one but it has not yet arrived.

And Cartonnage  – the "art of box making" by Claudia Squio. She has a website, ColorWay Arts, where she has some free tutorials for introduction to fabric covered paper projects, one being a scissor case. She has an Etsy shop where she sells a few basic tools and some precut kits for projects she has done.

And the book CARTONNAGE BASICS & BEYOND The Complete Guide for Fabric Box Making by Claudia Squio , Lynn Hodge and Sherri Jones.
